Towards a Computational Pedagogy – Analysis of ABM Deployment in Pedagogical Instances
Journal Title: International Journal of Pedagogy, Innovation and New Technologies - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
This study is an exploratory analysis of existing ABM (Agent Based Model) mechanisms in pedagogical instances. It is limited to a single broad database of general ABMs. This analysis is focused on the extent to which these ABMs exhibit learning via non-social mechanisms. My intention is to better understand existing limitations to ABMs in simulating “learning” processes that are non-social. I am interested, at an ontological level, in exploring and understanding the emergence of the field of computational pedagogy. I have chosen ABM mechanisms analysis in pedagogical instances because I believe that one of the key differentiators between computational sociology of pedagogy and computational pedagogy is that, in the latter, ABMs should exhibit learning behaviors that are non-social and non-visible. My running hypothesis is that current ABM design in pedagogical instances is constrained to mechanisms that are social in nature and that, either for reasons of technology or construct, ABMs are currently unable to exhibit behaviors of embodied intelligence (as AI [Artificial Intelligence] is trying to do) and (by extension) - to demonstrate true instances of cognition and non-social learning.
