Toxicity of copper to tropical freshwater snail (Pila ovata)
Journal Title: Journal of Research in Biology - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
The potential toxicity of copper to freshwater snail (Pila ovata) was investigated in a static renewal bioassay for 96 hours. Chemically pure salts of copper sulphate (CuSO4. 5H2O) dissolved in distilled water was used as toxicant. Five copper ion concentrations with a control group were prepared. The LC50 at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h was 4.67, 2.12, 1.64 and 0.59 mg/l respectively. The LT50 of copper concentrations of 0.05 mg/l, 0.1 mg/l, 0.5 mg/l, 1.0 mg/l and 2.0 mg/l were 123.86 h, 97.20 h, 83.33 h, 75.32 h and 60.04 h respectively. No death was recorded in the controls. Survival time decreased with increasing concentrations of copper ion. The results showed that copper is toxic to Pila ovata and could pose serious threat to their survival in natural environment

Preliminary investigations on quantity and proximate quality of maggots produced from four different sources of livestock wastes
Maggot, housefly larva was grown on four substrates namely: poultry (layer) droppings, cattle dung, pig dung, and whole cattle blood. Poultry droppings produced maggots with the highest wet and dry weight, while the lowe...
Effects of dietary energy levels on growth performance, feed utilization and body composition of Rainbow trout
In order to compare the growth performance of trout with two extruded foods and their impact on body composition, an experimental test was conducted from June 1 to October 5, 2010 at National Center of Hydrobiology and F...
Effects of extruded diets with different energy levels on fat Body composition and profile of fatty acids of Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed extruded diets with different energy levels
We have evaluated the influence of energy level on the ratio of digestible protein and digestible energy on the body composition and fatty acid profile composition of fillet in rainbow trout. Two extruted diets with diff...
