TRADITIONS OF IBSEN’S «NEW DRAMA» IN THE PLAY OF B. SHAW «WIDOWER’S HOUSES »

Abstract

The article analyzes the intertextual influence of G. Ibsen’s «new drama» on B. Shaw’s play «Widower’s Houses». Preserving the external signs of a «well-made play» B. Shaw, following G. Ibsen, departs from this technique for a play-discussion. It is the discussion that becomes the basic principle of the organization of action. B. Shaw defends the position of social influence. The characters of the play are not divided into good and evil. They act not as traditional ones in a romantic comedy, but as models that confirm the author’s philosophy: human behavior in society is socially conditioned, but not explained by his inborn, genetic traits. The author gradually brings this idea through the whole action of the play. Subjects and problems, the form of the organization of the play’s action include the viewer in the action, and he becomes an accomplice in the play’s action, and is considered to be involved in what is happening The playwright refuses drama techniques that made the audience interested in «non-existent persons» and impossible circumstances. The rejection of the usual stage techniques and attraction of the viewer into the action of the play motivate another feature of Ibsen’s drama — discussion. Consequently, the discussion that generates narrative manner, performs a number of functions in the «new drama» and parodies the classical drama, stimulates the activity of the viewer (the reader) leads him to the decision, the tension of each scene, transforms in the conviction of characters. B. Shaw has continued the tradition of G. Ibsen, and made people themselves and those life situations that can happen to everyone, the subject of the image in the play.
