Trans-species assessment of antidepressant activity in a rodent model of depression.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2008, Vol 60, Issue 3
Abstract
Olfactory bulbectomy (OB), a preclinical model of depression, has most often been performed and validated in rats, but not as comprehensively in other rodent species. This study demonstrated that bulbectomy induced a hyperactive response in the open field test in three rodent species, namely the rat, mouse and hamster. OB, in all species, produced an increase in the distance travelled in the perimeter of the arena. The OB mouse was the only species to demonstrate increased distance travelled in the central part of the arena. These behavioral disturbances were attenuated in all species following chronic treatment with the antidepressant imipramine.

Comparison of the effects of crocin, safranal and diclofenac on local inflammation and inflammatory pain responses induced by carrageenan in rats.
Background: Crocin and safranal are the active substances of saffron and have many biological properties. In the present study, we compared the effects of crocin, safranal and diclofenac on local inflammation and its ind...
Structure, stability, and antiplatelet activity of O-acyl derivatives of salicylic acid and lipophilic esters of acetylsalicylate.
The anti-thrombotic activity of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) has been shown to be due to specific irreversible acetylation of blood platelet cyclooxygenase. The aim of our study was to investigate the associations between...
Antigenotoxic effect of genistein against 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene induced genotoxicity in bone marrow cells of female Wistar rats.
Carcinogen induced mutation in somatic cells leads to genetic instability, which is considered as an important facet of carcinogenesis. Agents that inhibit DNA adduct formation, stimulate DNA repair mechanisms, and posse...
Influence of cimetidine on the anticonvulsant activity of conventional antiepileptic drugs against pentetrazole-induced seizures in mice.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute (1 day) andchronic (7 days) administrations of cimetidine, an H(2) histamine receptor antagonist, on the protective activity of conventional antiepileptic drugs...
Acute treatment with metformin improves cardiac function following isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction in rats.
It has been proposed that metformin exerts protective effects on ischemic hearts. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of metformin on cardiac function, hemodynamic parameters, and histopathological changes in...
