TRANSNISTRIAN CONFLICT: THE RIGHT TO SELFDETERMINATION IN VISION OF TIRASPOL

Journal Title: Studia Securitatis - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

In many territorial disputes around the world, selfdetermination has become more and more a central issue for the communities involved. Despite international law providing clear regulations on the subject, some interest groups willfully misinterpret this institution in order to camouflage secessionist intentions. The Republic of Moldova is facing exactly such a situation. In the 90’s of the last century, the Moldovan territory to the East of the river Nistru, was separated from the control of the sovereign state through secession. Chisinau has been open and interested in reintegration of the territory, and has made efforts to eliminate any discrepancies between two banks of the river Nistru. Representatives from Tiraspol remain adamant that the Transnistrian settlement process concludes only with the recognition of its right to its selfproclaimed independence.
