Transubstantiation and Reincarnation in Classical Turkish Poetry

Journal Title: The journal of international civilization studies - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

People who are helpless in the face of death and who endeavour to alleviate the pain of death have developed different thoughts and beliefs. In this context, the spiritual ideas prevalent in ancient beliefs become increasingly important. The most important of these are transubstantiation and reincarnation. Because these understandings have found an area to spread independently together with the monotheistic religions. Therefore, it is an issue that should not be ignored. Considering the world in general and Hindu beliefs in particular, it can be said that billions of people regard this understanding as a belief. This subject, directly or indirectly, is often treated by poets of classical literature. The understanding of reincarnation is evident in poets close to the heterodox understanding of Islam. On the other hand, transubstantiation is used mostly for artistic purposes by poets from all walks of life and the expectation against death is expressed. However, it cannot be said that there are satisfactory studies on this subject in the literary field. Most of the studies are in the field of theology and are related to the Qur'an's approach to this issue. Therefore, in this study; this issue, which we think has been somewhat neglected, will be discussed. First of all, brief information about transubstantiation and reincarnation will be given and poetry examples will be given.
