Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2014, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

Paleopathology’s literature specifies the importance of trauma in consideration of health, social political incidents. The excavations conducted at Van Castle mound in 2010 revealed 183 skeletons date back to the medieval period. Within the collection of skeletons 18 trauma cases were identified. The number of individuals carrying trauma traces formed about %10 of the population. According to type and gender discrimination, compression fractures and deformation was far more observed in male skeletons, while open fractures and infections appeared on female skeletons. It seems that Men had been exposed to trauma more than women. In the studied population trauma traces were more common on postcranial bones. Taking into consideration the role of the settlement and the period, while integrating the results of the anthropological analysis related with trauma with other types of archaeological evidence; give us a clear indication that the population of Van Castle Mound was a farming community.
