Treatment of skeletal open bite in patients during growth– preliminary report

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: Treatment of growing patients with skeletal open bite is a significant challenge for contemporary orthodontics.Aim of the study: To evaluate preliminary results of treatment with combined use of a functional appliance and high-pull headgear in growing patients with diagnosed skeletal open bite.Material and methods: The material included 6 patients with open bite, in whom combined treatment with the use of functional appliance and high-pull headgear was commenced before or during the adolescent growth spurt. The evaluation of treatment results was based on comparison of clinical results and analysis of cephalometric pictures. Results: The bite conditions resulting from skeletal malformations improved in all patients. Conclusions: Early diagnosis of the defect allows the implementation of treatment based on an attempt to modify adverse pattern of growth. It often produces improvement of bite conditions and correction of vertical skeletal malformations.
