TRIBOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF BIONICS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6

Abstract

Bionics indicates the main principles of the technical systems that are similar to the characteristics of living organisms. This paper presents tribological aspects of bionics. The reason for such considerations is supported in following statements: • The biological world is a part of the physical world; therefore, the rules of mechanics and tribology can also be applied to living systems • In the evolutionary process, living motion systems become optimised to minimise friction at one end of the system, while maximising it at the other end. For example in technical world, we have bearings (small frictions) and couplings (large friction desired). • The biological diversity of technical applications is immense. Attachment structures are found in a great variety among animals and plants on the one hand, and technical devices, on the other hand, include various sorts of barbs, hooks, suction cups, and sticky pads. They operate by the use of various non-Newtonian liquids, elastic and hypo-elastic materials, and molecular adhesion forces.
