TRIBOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MATERIALS INTENDED FOR FOIL-AIR BEARINGS ELEMENTS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 238, Issue 4

Abstract

In the paper, the tribological research results of materials intended for foil-air bearings are presented. Two tested types of foil, intended for high-speed foil bearings, were provided by the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology of Warsaw. The first group was the bump foils with thickness not higher than 0.1 mm, made from the following alloys: CuCr5, CuMn5, CuNi25, CuAl5 and Ni5%Al2O3 composite. The second group contained top foils with 0.2 mm thickness made from B101 bronze and Inconel 600 alloy. The sliding surfaces of the Inconel 600 alloy were constituted by means of various technologies. The tribological investigation was performed on two kinds of friction contact: concentrated linear (T-05 block-on-ring wear tester) and conformal (T-15 ring-on-disc tribotester). The counter-specimens (rings) were made from 100Cr6 bearing steel. As a base of reference, the steel-steel friction couple (100Cr6) was chosen. The tribological properties of tested friction pairs were characterized by friction coefficient and wear intensity.
