TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF HYPEREUTECTOID ALLOY STEELS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

Influences of the microstructure and material characteristics on tribological properties of hypereutectoid 80CrMoV4-3 and 90CrV6 alloy steels are considered in this paper. Investigations concerned steels, the application of which, due to working conditions, requires the determination of their tribological properties. These steels differed by grain size (4 and 10 according to ASTM) and by an amount of secondary carbide precipitates, and slightly by hardness (288 and 305 HBW). The role of morphology of carbide precipitates in the mechanism of the wear of the tested steels in contact, both with structural steels and with bearing steel, is determined in the present paper. The average friction coefficient and kinetics of its changes as well as the wear degree in dependence of the applied counter sample are estimated. Grain refinement and an increase of the fraction of secondary carbides favour the friction coefficient increase and accelerate the stabilisation of tribological conditions. This also causes a more intensive wear of such steel in the case of being in contact with basic structural steels characterised by a distinct banding, while it causes a slight decrease of wear in the case of being in contact with bearing steel. Tribological tests were performed using T-05 tester, at a load of 100 N, and at room temperature. 100Cr6 bearing steel and S355J0, S235JR, and LRAH36 constructional steels were used as counter samples. Tests were performed for the time of 2000 seconds. Products of friction were removed from the counter sample during the tribological tests.
