TRIBOLOGY OF THE BOUNDARY LUBRICATION

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 239, Issue 5

Abstract

After explaining the occurrence of dry friction conditions and how loads influence the friction coefficient, the authors described the technical conditions under which the liquid lubrication takes place. Liquid friction occurs when the lubricant film is formed between the machine elements. In the paper, the conditions of lubricant film disruption leading to boundary lubrication are presented with a discussion of the standpoints in literature concerning the aspect of boundary lubrication. The mechanism of boundary layer creation between the friction joint elements is described. The formation of the layers being an effect of EP sulphur based additives action is also presented. Based on other research results concerning the properties of antiwear and (antiseizure) extreme pressure oils additives, the conditions of boundary friction occurrence are explained. In the paper, the diagrams showing the load and sliding speed influence on the coefficient of friction are also presented.
