Journal Title: Atmadeep - Year 2024, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Tripura is a historically significant region, and texts related to the Chronicle of the Tripura Kingdom testify to its ancient roots. The Chronicle of the Tripura Kingdom is primarily written in Bengali and Sanskrit. Some literary critics believe that one version of the chronicle, called ‘Rajabali,’ is the earliest extant work of Bengali literature, predating the ‘Charyapada,’ and that it was written in prose. The Sanskrit version of the chronicle, called ‘Rajratnakar,’ is also considered one of the oldest works of literature. One of the Bengali versions of the chronicle is titled ‘Rajmala,’ which is believed to have been written in the mid-15th century. Critics like Sukumar Sen and Dinesh Chandra Sarkar have expressed the view that the Bengali version of ‘Rajmala’ was not written before the 18th century. There are various versions of ‘Rajmala,’ written at different times under the patronage of different kings, which leads to some ambiguity about its exact composition. Many scholars have shared differing opinions regarding the composition period of the ‘Rajmala’ chronicle. This research paper aims to discuss the Bengali and Sanskrit versions of the texts related to the Chronicle of the Tripura Kingdom, examining their composition periods and their historical accuracy.
