TWO NEW PROSOPOGRAPHICAL LETTER FROM KÜLTEPE: THE EFFORT OF A MOTHER TO MATCH HER SON

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42

Abstract

Almost all of the cuneiform texts found at Kültepe are related to the commercial activities of Assyrian traders. Nevertheless, these documents are the sole recourses not only for enlightening the trading but also the social, political, cultural etc. aspects of the earliest historical period of Anatolia. Especially the family correspondences, mainly the emotional letters sent frequently by the women, are rather important for understanding of the social and cultural features such as domestic relations, traditions and customs of the era. The documents which are being introduced in this paper are prosopographical letters from Ištar-lamassī, living in Asur, to her son Amur-ilī in Kaniš. It is observed from her letters that she encouraged his son to marry a girl who was withheld only for him. The tablets contain also important evidences about the traditions of betrothal in young age and the dowry practice in Old Assyrian society.
