Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

‘‘Existentialism’’ and ‘‘theatre of the absurd’’ that portray modern-day individual’s loneliness, hopes, fears, self-alienation and alienation from nature affect all intellectuals of the world, as well as Turkish authors and poems. The poem ‘‘Çağrılmayan Yakup’’ in Edip Cansever’s book published in 1966 and the drama ‘‘Rhinoceros’’ put on stage by Eugene Ionesco in 1959 are two important works in the way that they both similarly and tragicomically portray individual’s trouble of existence and people who become monotonous along with the modernity. This article primarily discusses the concepts of ‘‘existentialism’’ and ‘‘theatre of the absurd’’, and then in the light of these two concepts, both texts are to be compared by focusing on Yakup and Berenger, two characters that cannot fit in with the society. In this way, this article tries to shed light on the similarities and differences of these two works written in two different literary genres and countries.
