Types of coalitions in Central and Eastern Europe

Journal Title: Sfera Politicii - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 5

Abstract

One of the major research interests in political science is to explain how representative democracy works. Regarding this aspect, some authors tried to explain the way coalitions form in order to ensure parliamentary support to governments. In the first part of the paper, I present the earliest theories concerning the models of coalition formation. The second section discusses the frequency of the types of coalitions formed in Central and Eastern Europe. The last part of the paper consists of conclusions regarding the adequacy of using these models to explain coalition formation processes.
