Abstract
The fortification’s study is a very important component of european history and especially for Transylvanian history. In very earlier medieval times the wood and earth fortifications was the most popular kind of defense for a kingdom, land or village. In Transylvania we have a few earth and wood fortifications but we haven’t a very good date, because of that is necessary to improve some results about archaeological results from Dăbâca, Şirioara, Cluj-Mănăştur, Zalău etc. We knew that all of earth and wood fortifications are coming from central and east Europe and all of them dating from 8th to 13th century. In our historiography we haven’t a good typology for these kind of fortifications, major part from historian split them in two categories: - fortifications with one of many earthworks and with one or two tranches - fortifications with palisades and eartworks Both of these categories do not permit to built a strong typology ana because of that I try to analized a few, well known, earth and wood fortifications from Transylvania. The final conclusions is that: in Transylvania we have some early fortifications from Xth century (tab. 1 and 2), they are very simple (with earthwall and primar palisade – fig. 1), other fortifications from XI-XII C. which are more complicated (with one or many earthwall and complex palisades – fig. 4 and 16)
