(Un)awareness of Internet threats among parents of secondary school children

Abstract
The article discusses the results of the research carried out in 2014 among the students from the selected secondary schools in Kielce and their parents. The research concerned the awareness of the students' parents in regard to cyber threats which their children may encounter. The analyses that were carried out focused upon three selected threats: hating, sexting and cyberstalking. One of the purposes of the studies was also to make a comparison between the parents' awareness about level of the risk concerning cyber threats and the level of the risk declared by the students themselves. The obtained results of the research have revealed clear discrepancies between the parents' awareness and the declarations of their children thus not only being an evidence of low awareness among the parents about the real level of cyber threats which their children encounter, but also revealing an urgent necessity of enhanced parental attention on what their children do while being in the virtual world.
