Understanding of Business Students on Business Social Responsibility (BSR) with regards to Profitability, Long Term and Short Term Success of Firms in Malaysia: PLS Approach

Abstract

This study identified the business student’s understanding on business social responsibility among Malaysian students. Part of its objectives is to examine the understanding of business students in terms of importance of business social responsibility as regards to profitability, and effectiveness of social responsibility in longterm and short-term success, the study review literature on the perception of business students on BSR. The variable in this study was measured using 7- point scale ranging from 1 strongly disagree to 7 strongly agree, one hundred and sixty three copies of questionnaires were administered to target the respondents from University Utara Malaysia(UUM). UUM is also the largest Business University in Malaysia. One hundred and eight copies of questionnaire were returned. Giving a total responses rate of 66.3%. The study uses a Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using SmartPLS2.0. The finding reveals that there is a significant relationship between business student’s understanding of the importance on social responsibility on effectiveness (profitability) and long-term success, also the study found also significant relationship between business students understanding on the long term and short term success of firms., but it was found that there is no significant relation with business students understanding on profitability of the firm and short-term success, the study recommends the improvement in ethics education in Malaysian universities.
