Understanding of the symptom in family therapy from an object relation theory perspective
Journal Title: Psychoterapia - Year 2011, Vol 157, Issue 2
Abstract
The authors show that while conducting family therapy we need to take into account the unconscious aspects of the functioning of a family, such as those resulting from object relation patterns revealed by family members. The authors make use mainly of the adaptation of object relations theory to family therapy done by David and Jill Scharrff while they also draw upon some works of other authors who apply a psychoanalytical approach to families like Samuel Slipp and Robin Skynner. Presentation of cases from the authors’ psychotherapeutic practice aims at showing that the symptom of an index patient is to be understood as a manifestation of emotional problems in the family as a whole. The dynamics of the symptoms of disturbance in families is analysed and the authors associate them with the unconscious emotional difficulties of the marital couple.
