Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to determine union member teachers’ perceptions and expectations towards unions. The sample of the study consists of 20 teachers who are the union members and have worked in public schools of Kahramanmaraş city during 2015-2016 educational years. Interview method was used in a qualitative design and the data were collected by using semi structured interview form. The results show that unions contribute to increase the social, cultural, economical, freedom, and personal rights of teachers, but they have limited contibution to education; they are too affected from politics and they may cause othering. Results indicate that, teachers should be members of the unions in order to declare their opinions, defend their rights, and feel themselves in safe. Also, it was found that the unions can primarily take into consideration teachers’ rights instead of politization.
