University Students Awareness of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Use of Social Media

Abstract

Objective: This study of university students on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases to investigate of awareness and information resources. Methods: After ethical and legal permits, a cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire were conducted with students drawn from different faculties and department of state university. In the evaluation of the data obtained with questionnaire SPSS package program was used. Results: In our study with a total of 452 university students, 70.4% of the participants were female, 26.6% were male and the average age was 20.9±3.3. In total, 6.8% of participants stated that they never used social media, while 55.3% identified themselves as active social media users. Instagram, Facebook and Twitter (79.9%, 70.1 % and 44.9%) were the most used social media platforms respectively. In order to make friends 81.8% of students were affirmative. A total of 81.6% of students used social media and the internet for sexual sharing, to follow the news, and advertising. In total, 63.5% wanted access to an outpatient clinic, or a counseling service in an established medical center, concerned with sexually transmitted diseases. Regarding the types of information on sexual issues available to students, 65.7% of health workers stated 61.3% of that conferences and training programs were the most valuable resources. However, students had difficulty obtaining information on HIV/AIDS, risky behaviors related to sexually transmitted diseases, routes of disease transmission, and methods of disease prevention. Conclusion: As a result, itwas found that students were able to obtain the most reliable information on sexual subject from health workwr and educational programs. In the medico-social center of the university it was determined that it was necessary to plan a counseling unit or training programs where students could consult their sexual problems.
