Upland cotton fibers under water deficit
Journal Title: Revista Verde de Agroecologia e Desenvolvimento Sustentável - Year 2018, Vol 13, Issue 4
Abstract
The Brazilian semi-arid region is characterized by low water availability due to persistent periods of drought, with which there is a need for better use of water in the irrigation of crops. So that, the objective of this study was to evaluate the water deficit effect, applied in different phenological phases, on the fiber yield, percentage and quality of upland cotton cultivars BRS 286 and BRS 336. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in a Split Plot scheme, with the six water deficit regimes, applied on the different cotton phenological phases, constituting the Plots, and the two upland cotton cultivars, the Subplots, in four repetitions. The variables analyzed were cotton fiber yield and percentage and some technological characteristics of the fiber, which were Length, Uniformity, Short fiber Index, Resistance, Elongation at rupture, Micronaire index and Maturity. The water deficit was more relevant in the stages of bud, flower and fruit. The most tolerant phases to the deficit were initial growth and open fruit. The technological characteristics of the fibers, such as length, uniformity, micronaire index and maturity, inherent to each cultivar, were within the varietal standard required by the textile industry. The two cultivars showed good cultivation potential for the semi-arid region, considering the distinct characteristics, but the choice is according to the producer's interest.

Phytosociology of spontaneous plants under agroecological cultivation in the banana tree in backlands of Paraiba
Plants are sessile organisms and therefore reflect local conditions. They generally have higher levels of phenotypic plasticity compared to animals, which means that the effects of various stressors may be more apparent...
Effects of water scarcity on the irrigated perimeter of São Gonçalo, Paraíba
The availability and uses of water in the northeastern region of Brazil, particularly in the semi-arid region, continue to be an important issue in its development. The population suffers from serious problems caused by...
Phytosociology and diametric structure of a fragment of Cerrado sensu stricto, Formoso do Araguaia, Tocantins, Brazil
The Brazilian Cerrado is composed of different phytophysiognomies, where one observes country, savanna and forest vegetation. Thus, a phytosociological survey was carried out to evaluate the diametric structure of a Cerr...
