URBAN COMMUNITY IN CRISIS? The Practices of Everyday Life in Urban Neighbourhood – Towards New Forms of Communal Life?

Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2018, Vol 19, Issue 1

Abstract

In this paper I explore the new mechanisms of socio-spatial structuration of the urban communities on the neighbourhoods’ level. These mechanisms are examined from the perspective of the theory of social practices and Fredrick Barth’s relational theory of social differences and boundaries. Such approach has been applied in the empirical research conducted in two Polish cities, in two types of estates in each city: one built as a modernist estate in 20th century and the other newly built semi-gated community of several blocks of flats. This article consists of three essential sections. In the first one I present the theoretical framework of the research. Following I discuss the methodological aspects of the empirical part of the project. Finally, I present the analysis and interpretation result, especially it is the parking practice, observed in all examines estates, which constitute “communities of parking” that are called in the project “parkinghoods”. The case of the community organised through the practices of investments and control is also discussed. In conclusions I indicate some theoretical and methodological implications of the application of the practice theory approach in the urban communities studies.
