URBAN COMMUNITY IN CRISIS? Towards the “Prospering” City. Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract
The article is devoted to the issue of a prosperous city, understood as a vision of the most important socio-spatial environment and the possibilities of achieving prosperity in this environment. Due to the level of urbanization and the accumulation of the most important material and non-material resources in the cities the thesis put forward that the condition of modern cities is crucial for the development of the world. In the first part of the article characteristics of the urban environment are indicated and can be treated as barriers or stimulators in building the desired spatial and social shape of the city and achieving the appropriate level of economic development. Next, the concept of urban prosperity is presented, including conditions and challenges that may have a significant impact on the process. At the end, options for dealing with challenges and possibilities of strengthening prosperity are presented by referring to the concept of urban social engineering.<br/><br/>
