URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ÇANKIRI CITY

Abstract
As an influential research interest in geography, behavioural geography examines relations between human behaviour and space. In this regard, perceptions in settlement people live range from various parameters like age and gender. Cities are among the settlements in which the most intense intercourse between residents and spaces appear. Some features of cities are shaped differently in minds of the dwellers. Hence, there are some symbols based on the city developed in conscious of them. For some time, these symbols may become geographic elements causing perceptions of the city. University students mostly prefer universities in other cities to the ones in their hometowns. Thus, in cities having a university there comes into existence a distant and alien group. By evaluating perception of urban environment, sample group in this study will naturally be students of Çankırı Karatekin University. With help of polls, perception of students on the city is tried to be revealed. Questions on urban identity are directed to students. The poll is formed by three stages in the first individual differences among participants, in the second sense of belonging to the city and lastly perception of urban environment reflecting urban identity are tried to be assessed by relevant questions. Then, statistical analyses of outputs of the poll are made. Besides, it is expected of students to draw mind of Çankırı and its elements and issues created after its first utterance. So, perception of Çankırı for students and its relation to the space are tried to be designated.
