Use of flocculants for treatment of liquid phase from processing liquid swine manure

Abstract
The by-product of non-bedding pig farming is liquid manure, which is a liquid mixture of animal faeces with processing water and addition of unused feed. Due to the load of organic and biogenic substances the liquid manure might cause contamination of ecosystems and therefore it shall be properly utilized. The article presents results of research on treatment of liquid phase of processed LSM (liquid swine manure) using commercially available flocculants. It has been found that the use of flocculants for treating the liquid phase of processed LSM is advisable and advantageous operation. Following levels of reduction were obtained for COD (78.5%), phosphorus (87%), colour (91%) and turbidity (97%) in samples of liquid fraction from liquid swine manure processing.
