USE OF THE VIBRANT SOUNDBRIDGE MIDDLE EAR IMPLANT WITH SHORT PROCESS INCUS COUPLER FOR CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE INFLAMMATION OF THE EXTERNAL EAR CANAL: CASE STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Hearing Science - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: The chronic obstructive inflammation of an external ear canal after different kinds of surgeries often leads to restenosis. There are different approaches to treatment of such cases; one of the solutions are middle ear implants. In this paper we analyze the efficacy of application of the middle ear implant Vibrant Soundbridge with the new incus-SP coupler in this type of cases. Conclusions: Application of the middle ear implant Vibrant Soundbridge can be an effective treatment in cases of hearing loss caused by the obstructive inflammation of external ear canals. The new incus-SP coupler seems to be an effective method of stimulating the middle ear in mixed hearing loss. Case report: We present a case study of the 29-year old patient with bilateral mixed hearing loss caused by the bilateral obstructive inflammation of external ear canals. He underwent meatoplasty with very short-lived improvement. Afterwards he was qualified for middle ear implantation to restore hearing. Vibrant Soundbridge was implanted with a new short process coupler (SP) FMT attachment. Postoperative hearing tests included: pure tone audiometry, free field audiometry, speech recognition and APHAB questionnaire.
