Utility of positron emission tomography in patients with esophageal cancer
Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 5
Abstract
Positron emission tomography (PET) by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used in more and more fields dealing with diagnostics and treatment of many types of neoplasms. The combination of the PET with computed tomography (CT) improves the diagnostic capability of this method. Inclusion of the PET imaging into the diagnostic process in case of esophageal cancer improves the efficiency in diagnosis of distant metastases and detection of recurrence. The results of PET study can change the stage of disease and the way of treatment in some patients. This method may play a major role in the assessment of response to neoadjuvant therapy by allowing better selection of patients for continuation of treatment. PET also may be used for radiotherapy treatment planning. Progression free survival and duration of survival are correlated with the magnitude of reduction in FDG measured metabolic activity after treatment. In Poland application of PET/CT in patients with esophageal cancer seems necessary and should lead to the optimal method of multimodality therapy.
