Utilization and flow of energy in tropical ecosystem: A test case for two Ox-bow lakes
Journal Title: International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology - Year 2006, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
To estimate the rate of organic production, two solar powered tropical natural aquatic systems (Ox-bow lakes) have been studied for 24 months. The study of utilization of energy in those two tropical lakes has revealed that herbivores were more efficient in energy utilization than autotrophs. Silver carp and grass carp were found to be most efficient in conversion of energy in the grazing and detritus food chain of these lakes. The efficiency of the system to fish production was found to be 0.05 % of the total available solar radiation. Various forms of life are all accompanied by energy changes, even though no energy is created or destroyed in the studied system.

Impacts of barrage flushing and flooding in operations on upstream total suspended solids
This study looks into the impacts of Sarawak Barrage (located in Kuching City, State of Sarawak, Malaysia) flushing and flooding-in operations on upstream total suspended solids (TSS). Water samples were collected from t...
Characterization and treatability of a contaminated soil from an oil exploration zone
A crude contaminated soil, arising from an oil production zone in Tabasco, Mexico was studied. A sample of about 40 kg was dried and screened through meshes 10-100. Total petroleum hydrocarbons and 6 metals (Cd, Cu, Cr,...
Occurrence of tributyltin compounds and characteristics of heavy metals
Surface sediment samples were collected from Tanzanian major commercial ports and studied for the distribution and behavior of tributyltin (TBT) compounds and heavy metals. The content of TBT in sediments ranged from NDÂ...
Origin and chemical partitioning of heavy metals in riverbed sediments
In the present investigation, bulk and chemical partitioning of elements in the Shefa-Rud riverbed sediments are studies. Higher concentrations of elemental concentrations have been observed in estuarine zone when compar...
Environmental management of coastal regions in the Caspian Sea<br />
Considering rapid population growth and migration, higher accumulation of communities is noticed in coastal areas. This is especially true with the coastal areas of the Caspian Sea. In the present investigation coastal a...
