Journal Title: DYSKURS Pismo Naukowo-Artystyczne ASP we Wrocławiu - Year 2013, Vol 16, Issue 16
Abstract
Krzysztof Olechnicki Notes on visual culture in sociological and anthropological context Visual culture is discussed in typical sociological and cultural-anthropological context including lack of demarcation level of epistemology and ontology of visual culture, differences between art historians and social scientists’ approach , “artificial” separation of the visual experience and other dimensions of human experience, undue importance of visual representations in contemporary world and faulty defining visual culture as a purely human product. Also, Olechnicki writes about multiculturalism and differences between icon-based western culture and other cultures who ignore icons. He calls for a dynamic understanding of visual culture as an ongoing process of constructing iconic environment, for analyzing it in many pragmatic ways, and for critical, interdisciplinary and open extra-academic discourse.
