VALUATION OF PROPERTIES OF DLC COATINGS APPLIED IN BIOTRIBOLOGICAL SYSTEMS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 225, Issue 3

Abstract

This analysis concerns the interaction of a Co-Cr-Mo alloy head with and without a diamond like carbon (DLC) coating and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup. The diamond-like carbon films were deposited on the Co-Cr-Mo alloy substrate using the high frequency plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (PACVD) technology. The coatings characterised by good wear and corrosion resistance were used to prevent the substrate destructive attack of the environment. The morphology and structure of DLC coatings were analysed by scanning electron microscopy. The tribological tests were performed in accordance with ASTM 732-82 in a T-17 tribotester for a sliding-reciprocating motion. The friction pair was analysed in the pin-on-plate type wear tests. The research shows that the coefficient of friction and wear for DLC films on elements of endoprostheses are better than Co-Cr-Mo alloy.
