Values of the nasolabial angle depending on the position of the mandible and skeletal Class

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

While assessing the facial profile orthodontists examine the nasolabial angle (NLA) formed between a line tangent to the base of the nose and a line tangent to the contour of the upper lip. The relationship between the value of this angle and the inclination of upper incisors is well known. Due to the multiple researches into the correlation between NLA and the position of the mandible found in the literature , the authors decided to make further inquiries into this subject. The aim of the study was to investigate a correlation between nasolabial angle value and position of the mandible depicted by SNB value and relationship between NLA value and ANB value illustrating the skeleton Class. Material and methods: The study involved 163 analysis of lateral cephalometric radiograms obtained from randomly selected patients treated in the Department of Jaw Orthopedics of the Medical University in Lublin. In all studied images sella turcica (S), nasion (N), point A, point B, upper lip (UL), subnasale (Sn) were marked as well as the lines: SN, NA, NB and axis of the upper central incisors, tangent to the base of the nose and upper lip. The nasolabial angle, SNA, SNB, ANB and 1:SN angles were assessed. The data was statistically analyzed using Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient r. Results: Performed analysis revealed a significant correlation between the values of the nasolabial angle and SNB, ANB, 1:SN. It was found that the lower the values of SNB and 1:SN angles are and the higher the values of ANB are, the higher the NLA values are. Class III malocclusion patients had characteristically lower values of the nasolabial angle in comparison to the Class I patients. The highest values of NLA were observed in patients with skeletal Class II. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 7 -15). Received: 29.02.2012 Accepted: 29.03.2012
