Verification of the dynamic treatment techniques in radiotherapy
Journal Title: Inżynier i Fizyk Medyczny - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 5
Abstract
Dynamic treatment technique was introduced into Polish oncology centers radiotherapy clinical practice at the turn of XX and XXI centuries. This technique involves modification of treatment field shape during the therapeutic session. Like any other irradiation technique, it needs to be verified, whether the calculated dose distribution is consistent with delivered during the treatment session. Unfortunately, developed verification methods of static treatment technique, within which the shape of the treatment field is constant during the procedure, cannot be directly used for dynamic treatment techniques verification. This is why the quality assurance of dynamic treatment techniques is very fast growing field of clinical dosimetry. Verification of dose and its distribution can be carried out in several ways using measurement phantoms or imaging devices integrated or not with biomedical accelerator. It is also possible to use locally developed or commercially available software to verify treatment session information stored in the databases. Most of the dose distribution verification methods are performed before patient starts the treatment. Dosimetry methods, phantom measurements of doses and dose distributions, as well as own experiences with portal dosimetry and MLC, were presented in the paper.
