Vitamin D and gastrointestinal diseases

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

Skin synthesis, the main source of vitamin D supply is restricted by multiple factors e.g. latitude, weather conditions, season, clothes, sunscreen, patient age, melanin content in the skin. Thinking about these restrictions it’s worth to draw attention to digestive tract and its role in supplementation of vitamin D deficiency. The main role of calcitriol, which is derived from dehydrocholesterol, is regulation of calcium-phosphate homeostasis. Recent studies are indicate several nonskeletal effects of vitamin D. These multiorgans effects depend on the presence of specific nuclear receptors (nVDR) in different tissues. Anticancer activity of vitamin D in digestive tract is connected with calcitriol impact on cell cycle, the induction of apoptosis and the regulation of expression of different proinflammatory cytokines and growth factors. Both excess and deficiency of vitamin D has the impact on the immune system, and may interfere cellural immune response. It is associated with the development of e.g. inflammatory bowel disease.
