VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IN TETOVA REGION

Abstract

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient needed to promote bone growth in children’s and adults. Normally vitamin D can be synthesized in the skin by exposure to sunlight, however during the winter and part of autumn is recommend to get vitamin D at a dose of 300 – 400 units daily. Recently numerous clinical studies show for the role of vitamin D in many autoimmune and allergic disorders especially asthma. At the same time some studies indicate for the relationship of vitamin D with allergic rhinitis. Most recent studies show that hypovitaminosis D seems to be on the rise in children as a cause of sunlight deprivation and inadequate vitamin D intake. The objective of our study was to show the prevalence of hipovitaminosis D among the people in region of Tetova. 421 healthy people aged 1 – > 70 years in which were measured the level of vitamin D are subject of this study. From totally 421 people included in this study 109 (26%) of them were man and 312 (74%) women. In all the participants the blood level of calcium and phosphate were normal. The serum concentration of PTH in females was 36 pg/ml whereas in males 33 pg/ml. In this study we compared the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the age-groups of 0 – 9, 10 – 19, 20- 39, 40- 59, and 60-80 years. Most of the people in our study were aged between 25 – 65 years. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the observed people differs during the seasons. During the autumn-winter season the vitamin D deficiencies were prevalent among 276 people whereas during spring and summer month the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was lower respectively 145. Hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent across all age groups not only in developing countries, but even in developed ones.
