Walnut shell as a natural adsorbent for the removal of Reactive Red 2 form aqueous solution

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 5

Abstract

Background: Among different aforementioned methods, adsorption is one of efficient methods for the removal of dyes from textile wastewater. Activated carbon because of the high cost of production and recovery in developing countries cannot use as a desirable option. Therefore, this investigation has been conducted for preparation of activated carbon from walnut wastes as a natural adsorbent for the removal of Reactive Red 2(RR2) form aqueous solution. and for optimizing variables; initial concentration of dye, and absorbent dosage Furthermore, the study of isotherm models as indicator has been conducted. Materials and methods: Walnut shell was collected and prepared in chemical – physical method and steam activation method was used. (RR2) was used for synthetic wastewater preparation. The adsorption study of RR2 was conducted in glassy column with diameter of 1 cm and 25 cm high, that filled by different dosage of carbon (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2).All experiments were performed six times with 144 tests. Excel software was used to analyze the results. Results: The results showed that adsorption of Reactive Red 2 on prepared activated charcoal steam has direct relationship with increase of color concentrations and inversely associated with the increased absorbent material. Match the results with the adsorption isotherm showed that data has better match with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with a R2=0.92.
