Wartości, style przywiązania i samoocena a materializm nastolatków

Journal Title: Polskie Forum Psychologiczne - Year 2016, Vol 21, Issue 3

Abstract

The study presented in this paper deals with relationships between preferred Values and attachment styles and materialism among teenagers, and also with the role which self-esteem plays in the influence of Values and attachment styles on teenage materialism. Two models were tested. The first one analyzed how Values concerning self-enhancement and self-transcendence affect teenage materialism. The second one examined the influence of attachment styles on teenage materialism. Self-esteem was a mediator in both models. The following tools were used: Youth Materialism Scale (YMS), Ro senberg's Self-esteem Scale (SES), Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ) and Adolescent Relationship Scales Questionnaire (A-RSQ). Results obtained in model 1 indicated that, out of all the analyzed Values, only the weight of power Value directly explains teenage materialism while the weight of achievement Value boosts self-esteem and, at the same time, decreases teenage materialism. Results obtained in model 2 indicated that, out of the four exarnined attachment styles, only preoccupied style directly accounts for diminishing self-esteem and increasing materialistic aspirations of teenagers. In conclusion, on the one hand, self-esteem mediates the influence on materialism only when achievement Value is preferred. On the other hand, absorbed attachment style acts as a mediator independently for both teenage self-esteem and materialism.
