What was ours was invaluable to us… PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE AS PART OF THE POLISH UNDERGROUND STATE’S (PPP) OPERATIONS 1939–1945

Journal Title: Muzealnictwo - Year 2017, Vol 58, Issue

Abstract

The paper presents various forms of Polish underground structures, known as the Polish Underground State, during WWII. Their activities were connected with the preservation of Polish tangible cultural heritage and within the context of intangible values associated with it. The paper describes the underground structures whose activity was focused on securing Polish archival, museum and library collections, public and private, against the restrictive politicies of the German occupying forces (the so-called Kulturpolitik, the system of occupational law which was violated the rules of international law). It also describes circles and individuals who were involved in this activity. The final part of the article draws specific attention to the destruction of the capital city, Warsaw, while mentioning the activities undertaken by the Polish underground against this background with a view to the future, as they worked to save the nation’s tangible heritage (which was being quite literally destroyed) with the intention of reconstructing it after the war’s end. The Royal Castle in Warsaw is presented as a symbolic example of this motivation.
