When the positive thoughts appear themselves. The impact of SSRI drugs on emotional processing in depression. Clinical vignette

Journal Title: Neuropsychiatria Przegląd Kliniczny - Year 2010, Vol 2010, Issue 4

Abstract

The paper combines two sources of data. The first one is the relation of patient concerning subjective experiences during the SSRI treatment. The second one is the result of scientific research on emotional processing in groups of healthy volunteers and depressed patients under antidepressant therapy. The patient describes his new way of thinking and perceiving social interactions as well as new possibilities of functioning in social domains. Research data are focused on cognitive neuropsychological hypothesis of antidepressant drug action (modifications of emotional processing under treatment). This concept is supported by neuroimaging data that show changes in reactivity of amygdala in subjects who received antidepressants.
