Witchs processes and Protestant churchesin Western Europe in the XVI XVIII centuries

Journal Title: Література та культура Полісся - Year 2017, Vol 88, Issue 8

Abstract

The author makes an attempt to trace back the origins and the nature of witchcraft and the persecuting the witch, which took place in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, and especially intensified with the beginning of the Reformation when Europe experienced a real hysteria of persecution. The causes of the outbreak of "witch hunting" and "witchmania" in the XVI XVII centuries were investigated. The process of litigation, the scale and effects of shameful persecution and the role of "scientific" demonology in fomenting the anti-witch hysteria on the example of witch persecution in Protestant countries are analyzed.
