Abstract
Introduction. According to ICD-10 classification system, dementia is a group of psychopathological symptoms caused by brain damage of a chronic or progressive nature. It is characterized by disturbance of higher cortical functions, that is, memory, thinking, orientation, understanding, counting, the ability to learn, language and assessment. Besides the weakening of cognitive functions, one also observes secondary mood disorders, interpersonal difficulties and behavioral changes. Dementia influences the patient’s basic activities of daily living and changes the life of their entire family. Memory disturbances entail functional disorders in the scope of washing oneself, dressing up, eating as well as hygienic activities and physiological functions. Aim. The paper presents the specific nature of Alzheimer’s disease and highlights the problems emerging during the treatment of a person suffering from dementia. It also underlines the patient’s need for comprehensive care which puts them in the centre and where the physician and the nurse become the subjects. Case study. The case study comprises a 68-year-old female patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The paper touches upon the basic problems encountered by the nursing staff when taking care of a patient with dementia. Discussion. A holistic approach to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease should include providing assistance not only to the patient themselves, but also to their family members because they carry the burden of taking care over their sick relative, who is often unwilling to cooperate. It becomes extremely important for the entire therapeutic team to cooperate; that team includes the family, physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers and psychologists. Conclusions. A patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is completely dependent on the persons taking care of them. Comprehensive assistance affects the life quality of people with diagnosed dementia, helping them in their fight with the chronic, progressive disease.
