Wspomnienia o Wiktorze Sukiennickim
Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2017, Vol 14, Issue 55
Abstract
The author recalls Professor Wiktor Sukiennicki – born 1901 near Kowno and died 1983 in Stanford – Polish lawyer, historian, Sovietologist, graduate of the University of Vilnius and the Sorbonne. In the years 1929–1939, Sukiennicki was a lecturer at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. During World War II, he was arrested by the NKVD and sent to a forced labour camp. After the war, he immigrated to Great Britain, and later the United States, where he worked at one of the leading American Sovietological centres – the Hoover Institute, attached to the University of Stanford in California. Maciej Siekierski recalls the professor and his assistance in editing his work concerning events on historically Polish lands during World War I. As the author recollects, this was an excellent occasion for Sukiennicki to supplement and expand his own historical knowledge on the subject. The work was completed in April 1989, on the eve of the professor’s death.
