Abstract

Different approaches, methods and techniques were always developed, and the developmental process is going ahead about the functions of foreign language teaching. One of the most discussed topics in the approach, methods and techniques is grammar teaching. Discussions about teaching grammar seem to focus on two points. One of them is what is the place of language knowledge in foreign language education. The second is the way in which the teaching of grammar should be continued. From past to present, when we take a look at the methods of teaching foreign languages, it is seen that some methods determine grammatical teaching as a primary goal and some methods do not accept grammatical teaching as an aim. It can be said that modern methods developed after cognitive approach adopted a third way. The methods that embrace this third way are on the one hand that foreign language education focuses on the development of the four basic language skills while on the other hand it is understood that the grammar, which is one of the three language components. In this study, it is discussed that which method is more appropriate in terms of success in teaching grammar (active or passive way) in foreign language teaching.
