Abstract
Among the acts of entrustment and consecration to Mary made by Pope John Paul II, which significantly marked his piety and his pontificate, the one made in Fatima on 13 May 1982, surely occupies the central position. It remains in direct relation with the apparitions of Fatima. On that day the Pope also recalled this fact in his homily, which constituted a broad introduction to the act of consecration he made there. Undoubtedly the act of consecration in Fatima has to be considered in connection with the actions undertaken by Polish bishops during the Second Vatican Council as well as with the practice of consecration acts present in Polish Marian devotion which was elaborated after World War II, especially as a response to various threats and persecutions that the faithful of the Church in Poland had to struggle with. In this article we focus on the ecclesiological aspects of the consecration to Mary made by St. John Paul II in Fatima in 1982. In this act the Pope appears as the Visible Head of the Church and the representative of the whole mankind, uniting spiritually with the entire episcopate all over the world. The immediate circumstances of the act of consecration are the threat of self-annihilation and widespread apostasy that the Church and the whole world is facing, which may lead to the fall of whole societies. Therefore Pope John Paul II addresses Mary as the Mother of all people and the Mother of the Church. In the act of consecration at Fatima Pope John Paul II and the whole Church expressed faith, hope and love which are the fundamental act recognising the primacy of God over the entire mankind and the whole creation. That is why it was so important that the act should be collective, including the whole Church, its shepherds and all the faithful. That is also the source of its universal character.
