Abstract
Finding of the 17th and 18th Century Coins from Lublin The Lublin Museum owns a finding of 11 Polish and foreign coins of a low face value from the 17th and 18th centuries. The set is composed of a chronologically coherent group of coins from the first half of the 17th century and a collection of coins from a later issue of the King Stanisław August Poniatowski (1764–1795) from 1794 (which is the date of hiding of the set). The presence of the Polish coins of the King Sigismund III Vasa (1587–1632) and the Swedish ones of Gustavus Adolphus (1611–1632) in the deposit from the end of the 18th century is an interesting issue. One should remember that the coins of Sigismund III Vasa were practically out of the circulation by the 1670s. Still, their presence had been reported in a significant number of groups of treasures deposited in the last quarter of the 17th century, as well as in the sets hidden during the whole 18th century (although in this case they were a small and a steadily decreasing part of the treasures). It is hard to determine if the 1794 grosz coin was an original part of the Lublin treasure, or if it was added later. The coins from the 17th century issues had been in circulation for a long period of time: they are worn, dim, few of them have numerous defects. As a result, the actual weight of półtorak (one-and-a-halfer) coins, both Polish and Swedish, differs considerably from the mint-ruled weight, and is equal to (respectively) 0.67 and 0.56 g. It is worth noting that in other 17th century treasures, the coins from these issues weight app. 1 g. On the other hand, the grosz of Stanisław August Poniatowski doesn’t bear any significant signs of being worn in its circulation; one could note only changes related to corrosion resulting from spending a long period of time in adverse conditions.
