Abstract

This paper is based on the review of the psychological counselling and psychology dissertations which investigate aggression. The key term, “aggression”, was used to scan the higher education dissertation database and open access dissertations which had been published between 2000 and 2019 were examined. In the final analysis, twenty-one dissertations were eligible for the review and content analysis among 81 dissertations. The findings of the dissertations were reviewed systematically and discussed thoroughly in the discussion chapter. According to the content analysis, dissertations were examined and categorized under six themes; discipline, publication year, method, sample, measurement tools, and statistical methods. The systematic review indicated that aggression is related to a variety of variables. It was seen that boys are more aggressive than girls and aggression levels change with regards to the type of school and developmental period of children. It was concluded that individual features (personality, intelligence) and family characteristics (authoritative attitude, aggression history) predict aggressive behaviors. The content analysis revealed three results: a) research on aggression was conducted with experimental designs, b) samples are generally consisted of students, c) analysis of variance was used more than any other statistical method.

Abstract

In this study, graduate dissertations and theses on teachers’ burnout are evaluated methodologically. In this context, academicians who will study in the field will be supported by revealing the current state of the related studies. This study has pioneering quality in terms of giving direction to the new research that will be done in the field later. In the research in Turkey, it has been looked for the answers to the questions on which methodology, design, validity and reliability, sample type, data analyses techniques are used along with distribution according to universities and years in the graduate dissertations and theses that were published on teachers’ burnout between the years 2010 and 2019. In the research, it has been determined that there are 160 master dissertations and 4 doctoral theses that have been completed between 2010 and 2019. It has been seen that most of them were written in 2009 with 44 items. Among the examined items, 109 dissertations and theses did not include any statement on the research methodology followed. The quantitative method is used in the 43 dissertations/theses of the remaining 55 items. Correlational design and descriptive design were the two most used research designs used along with the preferred sampling technique of simple random sampling. It has been seen that the correlational data analysis method is mostly used as a data analysis method published dissertations and theses on the subject.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the methods and techniques which Turkish teachers use to improve students' speaking skills and the sample practices that they use. Designed as a qualitative phenomenological research, this study employs semi-structured interview schedule, which is a qualitative data collection technique. Consisting of 10 Turkish language teachers, the study group was selected in accordance with the snowball sampling technique. The available data were analyzed using content analysis. The data obtained in the study are explained and interpreted in detail in the findings section. The results reveal that that the Turkish teachers participating in this study were insufficient in using methods and techniques that encourage active learning and teaching in teaching of speaking skills. In addition, the situation of the participants about the knowledge that they need to have in order to apply rich teaching methods and techniques in their lessons is discussed in the results and suggestions section.

Abstract

A wide variety of approaches have been adapted for the purpose of conducting research related to English Language Teaching. In the first quarter of the 20th century, reflective thought was introduced by John Dewey. He highlighted the role of reflection through interpretation of the experience, naming the problem coming into view during experience, offering explanations for the problem, producing hypotheses and experimenting them. Although these phases seem familiar in today’s instructional context, it is truly compelling that reflective thought has become prominent and characteristics of effective instruction almost recently. This may be due to discrepancy between teachers and researchers or several researchers’ disregarding the important variables that directly influenced the results they obtained. Currently many prefer to proceed on the basis of their own determinations of the particular context of the research setting, essentially acknowledging the teacher’s active role in determining the most appropriate methodologies to use, contextual and affective factors. Thus, much post method era research eschews adherence to established methods and their principles and is at liberty to tailor approaches to contextual requirements. This paper intends to provide a brief overview of ELT research shift towards a more context specific and reflective stage.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the social studies teachers’ views towards virtual tour applications and their effective use in social studies course. Qualitative research was preferred as the research method and the case study approach was used. The study group consists of 25 teachers (16 males and 9 females) working in Bursa. The study data was collected through a semi-structured interview form and then thematic analysis was performed. The results obtained revealed that social studies teachers’ beliefs about the use of virtual tours are that these applications are interesting, embody the subject, provide a sense of reality, and motivating. Teachers also stated that the virtual tour is a useful tool since it is economic and provides permanent learning. Based on the teachers’ beliefs about the use of virtual tours, the following recommendations are offered as a result of this study: First, in-service training on virtual tour should be provided to teachers by Turkish Ministry of National Education (MoNE) and second, contents related to the virtual tour should be prepared by MoNE considering the outcomes of the curriculum. Additional recommendations made by the interviewed social studies teachers are as follows: establishing an information technologies class in the schools and making this class available to different branches such as the social studies, and finally, strengthening the internet infrastructure of schools to support virtual tour applications.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to identify the impact of the quantum learning model on 7th grade students' success in social studies classes, and their anxiety and metacognitive awareness levels. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test and control groups was used. The study was conducted with 26 7th grade students attending a public school in Hınıs district of the province of Erzurum in 2018-2019 academic year. Experimental and control groups were intact assigned. During the implementation period, the unit titled "Population in Our Country" in 7th grade social studies class was taught using the quantum learning model in the experimental group whereas the unit was taught utilising the regular teaching-learning methods. Students in the experimental group were asked to keep a diary of the process and students expressed their opinions on the matter. The study was conducted for a total of 15 hours, with a scheme covering 3 hours per week, 5 weeks in total. Research data were collected using the Social Studies Success Test (SBBT; a 33-question test), Social Studies Class Anxiety Scale, and the Junior Metacognitive Awareness Inventory Version B (JrMAI-B). Scales and the achievement test were conducted before and after the implementation. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0. The research results reveal that the quantum learning method increases students' academic success; however, it does not create any significant difference in their levels of anxiety and metacognitive awareness.
