Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The article deals with the image of Kyiv St. Florus Monastery in guide-books and reference works of 19th – early 20th ct. about Kyiv and all Orthodox pilgrimage centres. For expansion of context, material from collections of the probed period, devoted to miraculous Virgin Mary icons, was attracted. Research of illumination of concrete sacred objects features in reference works and guide-books will help to expose the features of holiness perception on the different levels of society. Also this research will be useful to understanding of social connections forming round the objects of prayer honouring. The author makes conclusions, that information about the sacred objects of St. Florus and Ascension monastery is only in part of the probed guide-books and reference works. These mentions were done mainly from 2nd half of 19th – early 20th ct. In a prospect it is expedient to find out the reason of such growth of interest with bringing in of additional sources. It’s notably, that the compilers of guide-books and reference books mainly selected the Virgin Mary icon from Rudnya among other reverent objects of St. Florus monastery. However, they didn’t spare much attention to this icon. Such exposition is fully explainable, if the probed authors didn’t perceive the St. Florus monastery as the place for primary pilgrims visit. It’s possible, that the Virgin Mary icon from Rudnya was described as central, because the habitants of Kiev applied to it more frequent, than to other sacred objects of monastery. The proportion between local and external pilgrims among those, who showed the special honouring to the sacred objects in St. Florus monastery needs subsequent research as well as a problem of I. Mazepa influence on the image of the icon in guide-books and reference works.
