The National Museum of the King Jan III in Lviv and Boleslaw Ozhehovych collection: the formation of collections of military historical attractions (1908-1940)

Abstract

The article deals with a process of becoming one of the leading museum of the Polish community in Lviv – The National Museum of the King Jan III, and the process of the formation of its military historical collections. The article discusses an important problem of the history of the collection one of the famous collector and philanthropist Boleslaw Ozhehovych. The article is on the role of Polish intelligentsia in the formation and saving Lviv museum collections of the first part of XX century. A contribution of any public and scientific figures in the museum construction has been revealed. The main figure in process of museum formation in Lviv was collector, museum and cultural activist, historian and archaeologist Alexander Cholovscy. The national factor was one of the most important in a public life of Lviv at that time. Polish community strived to create their own independent state. Its desire was represented in a museum construction. After the World War II Lviv museums were reorganized. In 1940 all military and historical attractions have been focused in the new Lviv Historical Museum. Nowadays all these collections are the important source for learning the military history. They need the further research
