Abstract
The article analyzes the material of written monuments and archaeological research. The history of the city is connected with the name of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich. In the place where the Belgorod was from the last quarter of the tenth century, in the VII-IX centuries a settlement of representatives of the Slavic tribes was located, but the city is not the result of their continued existence and development. The first mention of the city, what is evidenced by archaeological material, characterizing it as a feudal castle, but this period in view of the second chronicles message was short. By order of Vladimir Svyatoslavich, in 991 performed a building in Belgorod, erected a new defensive lines using wooden – soil and raw bricks. The citadel and extramural part of the city territorial are increasing and their total area is about 100 hectares. For such a large area of settlement brought people from other towns and villages.
